White Christmas (sort of...)

After enjoying a leisurely Christmas morning in Bakersfield, we packed the Avalanche fit to burst and headed up the mountain to Mariposa.  Little did we know we would be regretting our decision to pass on the four-wheel-drive option....

Just outside of Coarsegold it began to snow, HARD.  I wasn't too terribly concerned until we began the downward descent into Oakhurst.  The grade started to resemble a large white slip-n-slide with cars slipping at odd angles and our own vehicle's tires skidding in unnatural directions (at which I would scream at Joel, "turn TOWARD the skid!!!!!").  Thankfully, we made it down the mountain mostly on prayers and a steady crawl at 5 mph, and I called Dad, asking him if he thought Vons (the only store apparently open on Christmas) might possibly carry chains.  He didn't think so, but said there was no precipitation happening in Bootjack, and that we had probably just gone through the worst of it.  We decided to press on, with the understanding that if it got too scary, we'd turn back around and find a motel room in Oakhurst.

Fortunately, we made it to the Davis residence, with only slightly shaken nerves, mostly from the red-neck trucks riding our bumper and flashing brights at us for crawling down the grades (pooey on them, we were more concerned with saving our asses from plummeting down the snowy cliffs than in making good time...)

It did make for incredible snow play, however.  We trekked to Fish Camp one afternoon to play in the snow.  Julia had been to the snow once last year, but I don't think she remembered it.  She was not convinced sledding was a good past-time, and so preferred to sit and eat the snow, occasionally mounding it into a "snow-man."

Sandy and Smokey

Mostly, Smokey and Sandy chase each other around the yard and nip each other on the butt. But when it is cold, Smokey tries to cuddle up to Sandy whenever possible. Sandy, on the other hand, finds swimming in the mud swamp in our flower bed a desirable activity, rain or shine, 100 degrees or 35 degrees...

This afternoon, it is brisk outside, about 50 degrees. Sandy is enjoying a nap in the sunshine, Smokey decides to absorb a bit of her natural warmth (and no, he is not being naughty here.... he is just laying on Sandy).

As you can see, little phases Sandy.  She continued to nap even after Smokey vacated his cuddle to bark at the neighbor's cat.

Generation Dress

This year my mom brought out the little red and white dress that she wore, I wore, and now Julia has worn - 3 generations. Julia had so much fun wearing it that she cried when I made her take it off for dinner! Here are some of the highlight from our little photo shoot.

Christmas Tree

Here it is!  We had fun picking out our tree Wednesday night, and Julia and I decorated it yesterday.  She did really well!  Mostly, she played with the little patchwork balls while I decorated, but she did place some bows and paper cranes.  :)

Donald Duck Puzzle

Ok, so I may be biased when I say my child scares me sometimes with her brilliance, but I was absolutely SHOCKED this weekend at my parents' when Julia put together a Donald Duck puzzle all by herself.  She watched Natalie and Lisa doing the puzzles, and she was hooked.  She couldn't get enough of the puzzles (hmmm - Christmas gift ideas???).

I went searching online for some simple tray-frame puzzles like this one (that was mine when I was little), and was disappointed in the selection of puzzles out there.  The cute Melissa and Doug puzzles are too easy, they just have one shape in each slot rather than multiple pieces making up a single shape.  And the rest of the jigsaw puzzles aren't the same idea of a single image cut up into pieces - they all have landscape and backgrounds.  So if anyone finds some puzzles at a yard sale or something similar to this one, snatch them up for me and I'll reimburse!!!  In the meantime, I did order two Mickey Mouse simple jigsaw puzzles (not in frame trays).  So we'll see how she likes those after Christmas.
